Biography
Mark attended the University of South Carolina and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a double-major in Finance and Management (now HR). Mark was then conferred the Juris Doctorate degree from USC (with a focus on business and tax courses). He clerked for Adams, Quackenbush, Herring, and Stuart in downtown Columbia, S. C. during and after law school.
As a clerk, Mark drafted a successful IRS Private Letter Ruling (PLR) request on behalf of the State of South Carolina while still in law school for a complex tax-saving Sale-Leaseback transaction. It was signed by the Governor, published by the IRS, and saved the state hundreds of thousands of dollars in office space leased within a historic downtown structure in Columbia, SC. He also drafted dozens of trusts and estate plans and processed 1031 real estate transactions and bond issuances for first mortgage bundled for sale on Wall Street while clerking.
Mark’s practice includes wills, trusts (revocable and irrevocable), probate, probate-avoidance, business and tax law. His passion is asset protection, so his work emphasizes sophisticated tax and asset protection processes, avoiding nursing home expenses by Medicaid planning, and family legacy building.
Mark and his wife raised 5 children and are enormously proud of each of them and the 11 grandchildren. Mark’s interests: Veteran housing, tax reduction strategies, classical music, and travel, particularly in Scandinavia.
